Victoria is positioning itself as a leader in the clean coal industry, with a $127.4 million boost from the Victorian Government to support a series of carbon capture and storage projects in the state.

Victoria’s position in the Asia Pacific will be strengthened with a new Victorian Government Business Office set to open in Malaysia later this year. The Kuala Lumpur office will facilitate new opportunities for Victorian businesses to boost their trade in industries such as health and education.

High prices for gold have resulted in record levels of exploration in Victoria with estimates there is still another 30 to 50 million ounces of the precious mineral yet to be discovered.
Victoria produced 225,000 ounces of gold in 2006-07, valued at approximately $210 million - a 10 per cent increase on the previous year.

Recently released global rankings from the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) and Institute for Management Demand (IMD) have both placed Australia among the top international locations for business.
The EIU’s Business Environment Rankings placed Australia sixth out of 82 countries while the IMD’s World Competitiveness Yearbook placed Australia seventh out of the 55 countries examined.

Australia’s global nanotechnology presence will be bolstered thanks to a $45 million purpose-built centre in Melbourne, due to be operational by late 2009.
The Melbourne Centre for Nanofabrication will be the Victorian node of a national network, with Monash University taking the lead for the project which is being developed by the state and federal governments, the CSIRO and several Victorian universities.

Strong industry interest in exploration for geothermal energy has prompted the release of 19 new Victorian exploration areas covering more than 154,000 square kilometres in both the north and south of the state.

Melbourne’s liveability and attractiveness to foreign students are two reasons the city has increased to fourth place in the latest Global University City Index, beating out Sydney in the ranking which measures cities on their ability to establish strong universities.
