  Construction to start in 2009 on world's largest solar power station

 

A Victorian Government seed grant of $50 million will help deliver the world’s largest photovoltaic (PV) solar power station to be built in northern Victoria, in a win for the State’s environment, innovation and economy.  TRUenergy is to invest $290 million in renewable energy company Solar Systems to build the 154MW solar power station, with construction due to begin in 2009, once the site has been finalised.

   Melbourne a top choice for Asian expats

 

Melbourne is the third most popular place for Asian expatriates to live, according to the latest Location Ranking Survey on expatriate living conditions.

The annual survey, undertaken by ECA International - the world’s largest membership organisation for international human resources professionals – compared living standards in 254 locations, with Melbourne, Sydney and Canberra making the top ten.

   World-first gigabit wireless chip designed in Victoria

 

The world’s smallest two-way gigabit wireless chip was unveiled in Victoria, heralding a new era in ICT innovation.  The revolutionary 5x5 mm chip is the first in the world to encompass digital, analog and radio frequency circuitry and an antenna all on the one CMOS technology chip.

   Phantom works brings future of aerospace to Melbourne

 

Melbourne is set to play a central role in shaping the future of the global aerospace industry, with Boeing deciding to establish one of two new Phantom Works advanced research and development centres in Port Melbourne.

The new Phantom Works branches will provide R&D support services for Boeing’s Australian business units and act as a focal point for collaboration with local universities, private sector R&D providers, the CSIRO and the Defence Science and Technology Organisation.

   Victoria continues to lead Australia in jobs creation

 

More jobs were created in Victoria than any other state in the year to January, according to Australian Bureau of Statistics Labour Force figures released in February.  The figures show an additional 7,500 jobs were created in the first month of this year, bringing the total number of jobs for the last twelve months to 90,400 – the largest increase of any state.

   AXA announces eSecurity expansion in Melbourne

 

In a major business coup for Victoria, AXA Technology Services has chosen Melbourne as the location for one of their global ICT activity hubs, strategically positioned to support initiatives to AXA Asia Pacific.  Melbourne will provide a data centre facility, technical support and an eSecurity Regional Centre allowing AXA Technology Services to provide around the clock support to their clients.

Underpinned by the Victorian Government ICT Industry Plan 2005 – 2010, AXA Tech and the State Government are helping bring the local ICT industry onto the global stage through strategic collaboration.

   Venture capital boost worth $150 million for innovation

 

Australian ICT, biotechnology and cleantech industries are set to benefit from a multimillion dollar injection of Victorian venture capital.  One of Victoria’s leading venture capitalists, Starfish Ventures, has started fundraising for Starfish Technology Fund LP II and already raised $150 million - well on track to reach its fund target of $250 million.
