A Victorian Government seed grant of $50 million will help deliver the world’s largest photovoltaic (PV) solar power station to be built in northern Victoria, in a win for the State’s environment, innovation and economy. TRUenergy is to invest $290 million in renewable energy company Solar Systems to build the 154MW solar power station, with construction due to begin in 2009, once the site has been finalised.

Melbourne is the third most popular place for Asian expatriates to live, according to the latest Location Ranking Survey on expatriate living conditions.
The annual survey, undertaken by ECA International - the world’s largest membership organisation for international human resources professionals – compared living standards in 254 locations, with Melbourne, Sydney and Canberra making the top ten.

Melbourne is set to play a central role in shaping the future of the global aerospace industry, with Boeing deciding to establish one of two new Phantom Works advanced research and development centres in Port Melbourne.
The new Phantom Works branches will provide R&D support services for Boeing’s Australian business units and act as a focal point for collaboration with local universities, private sector R&D providers, the CSIRO and the Defence Science and Technology Organisation.

More jobs were created in Victoria than any other state in the year to January, according to Australian Bureau of Statistics Labour Force figures released in February. The figures show an additional 7,500 jobs were created in the first month of this year, bringing the total number of jobs for the last twelve months to 90,400 – the largest increase of any state.

Australian ICT, biotechnology and cleantech industries are set to benefit from a multimillion dollar injection of Victorian venture capital. One of Victoria’s leading venture capitalists, Starfish Ventures, has started fundraising for Starfish Technology Fund LP II and already raised $150 million - well on track to reach its fund target of $250 million.
